Former English referee Mark Clattenburg has revealed how he once thought Luis Suarez was better than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
The 50-year-old called the Uruguayan striker a 'talented player' but claimed he was a 'difficult player to judge'.
Suarez was considered one of the best strikers of his generation. Playing for top teams such as Ajax, Liverpool and Barcelona, he has amassed 509 goals and 277 assists in 846 appearances at club level to date.
He is also Uruguay's top scorer, with 69 goals and 39 assists in 143 matches.
On GOAL's "Beast Mode On" podcast, Kaltenburg recalled a match between Ajax and Slovakian team Slovan Bratislava during the 2009-2010 Europa League season.
In the first leg of the play-off round, Suarez scored four goals for the Dutch team, which won 5-0.
Clattenburg said:
" I'll tell you another player who for me was extremely talented. A difficult player to referee, but a talented player, was Luis Suarez."
I remember refereeing him when he played for Ajax and he scored four goals against Slovan Bratislava. I went home to my friends and said 'I've just seen one of the best players. Forget Ronaldo, forget Messi '.
" I said, 'Wow, this is a super player'. He moved to Liverpool a few months later. He was one of those players who could connect with everyone. I think Messi has said openly that he liked playing with Suarez because he did all the dirty work for him ," Clattenburg added.
Despite turning 38 this year, Suarez continues to make a difference for MLS side Inter Miami.
