Guangzhou FC's "Ace" Yasir Asani announced his transfer to Iran mid-season. Esteghlal announced on their official website: " We have signed an 18-month contract with Asani ."
Asan's contract with his current club, Guangzhou FC, expires in January next year. However, Esteghlal added that they are working with Guangzhou FC to ensure that Asan joins the team as soon as possible. Esteghlal is a prestigious club, with nine league titles and seven cups in its history. It has also consistently performed well in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League.
Asani joined Guangzhou FC ahead of the 2023 season and quickly caught the attention of fans with his signature left-footed shots and quick passing. He was particularly threatening from distance and in set pieces, adding life to Guangzhou FC's attack. In the 2024–2025 AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE), held in March, he played in ten matches, scoring nine goals and providing one assist, leading the team to the quarter-finals.
Asani made the move by taking advantage of the Bosman rule, which allows players to negotiate freely with other clubs six months before the expiry of their contract. Due to Guangzhou FC's financial situation, Asani was expected to move to Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan this summer, but he chose to stay. The sudden news of the transfer, coupled with the possibility of his early departure during the season, came as a shock to Guangzhou FC fans.
In South Korea, some saw the decision as disappointing. The team’s “ace,” Asan, they said, disappointed fans by announcing his transfer while his contract was still valid. An inside source at the Korean club said: “ The situation between Esteghlal and Asan is rare in football. When a player transfers, both clubs usually agree to announce it simultaneously at a certain point. Or, it is usually the ‘parent’ club that makes the announcement. This announcement by Esteghlal about Asan’s transfer shows a lack of respect for Guangzhou FC. ”
Guangzhou FC itself stated: “ Asani promised to stay with the team if he was not transferred until the additional player registration period (July 24), but he betrayed his trust. We confirmed through social media that Esteghlal wanted him to join earlier, but nothing has been decided yet .”
An official from the Korean club summed up the situation: “ There has been no contact with Esteghlal yet. If they want Asan to be transferred early, negotiations will have to take place for a transfer fee. But before that, the coach’s decision is essential. We will decide whether Asan will play the rest of the season or not. The players are currently on vacation. We will meet with the coach to review the current situation .”
