Newcastle are reportedly planning to build a new 65,000-seat super stadium at Leazes Park, the Daily Mail has revealed. The club are preparing to submit their plans to the government for approval for a project that would create hundreds of jobs and bring significant investment to the local economy. Downing Street is expected to give the green light to the development of the club controlled by Saudi Arabia's PIF fund and help it overcome any bureaucratic hurdles.
The alternative option, that of redeveloping St James' Park, has been shelved for the time being. In any case, the new stadium would retain its central location in the city, within Leazes Park. The proposed site does not overlap with St James', meaning the club would be able to continue playing at its full capacity ground while the new one is being built.
The club has played at the stadium for 133 years, making the move a historic one. The club's Saudi owners unveiled the plans at a summit at Matfen Hall last month and, crucially, chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan is said to be fully supportive of the project. Building a new stadium would be the best solution to maximise revenue and meet the club's targets, currently constrained by English FFP regulations.
The next step involves further discussions with local authorities and the government, before final approval by the Saudi Public Investment Fund. Once the feasibility of the project has been verified, a final decision will be communicated to fans. The exact cost of construction and how it will be financed remain unknown.
However, this impressive development represents the strongest signal yet of PIF’s commitment to the club. The stadium designs, first seen by officials, are described as spectacular. The exterior will have a “bubble” look and will be surrounded by a green area that will act as an entrance, equivalent to the famous Wembley Stadium in London. London-based architecture studios KSS and Newcastle-based Rider contributed to the design. The reference model is Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena.
Initially, it was thought that Newcastle officials wanted a capacity closer to 70,000. However, it is important to avoid the risk of empty seats, even for just one match a season.
