The famous Croatian footballer, Luka Modric, won the trial against the state of Spain. He will be enriched with 3.6 million euros and he fought for this victory for years.
The decision in favor of the Croatian midfielder was given by the Economic and Administrative Court in Madrid, which ruled that the Spanish tax authorities have significantly damaged the Real Madrid midfielder more than ten years ago.
The year 2012 is contested, during which Modric moved from Tottenham to Real Madrid and the authorities "cut" an excessive amount of money at the end of the year.
They taxed him by pretending he had spent the whole year in Spain and he had only been a member of Real Madrid until the end of August.
According to "El Mundo", it has been established that the tax collectors have collected the tax from Modric in separate amounts of 1.2 and 1.5 million euros, in addition they have fined him with 900,000 euros and now they must return a total of 3.6 million euros.
The Spanish tax authorities defended themselves by claiming that, even though Modric was in Madrid for only four of the possible twelve months, he made most of his income on the ground in this country, but this was not an argument that went to court.
The law was on Modric's side because it says a resident of Spain is considered a person living in the country for 183 days, and Modric spent 127 days there in 2012.
