The attacker of the Albanian National Team, Mirlind Daku, has spoken to the Russian media, asking for forgiveness for the incident that happened during Euro 2024, which forced UEFA to punish him with two matches.
After the meeting in the match with Croatia, Daku took the loudspeaker and began to sing an insulting song against Serbs and Macedonians.
For Sport-express.ru , the attacker said that this is one of the most difficult moments in his career and that he feels ashamed of what happened.
"Obviously, this week was very difficult. I have faced pressure that I have never had before. I was at the center of a scandal, for which I am ashamed. I did not want to instigate such a situation, not to mention that it caused a wave of reactions in the media. Everything got out of control. After things like this, I always get stressed. These thoughts and experience do not leave me", said Daku.
He also made an explanation of the situation "since not everyone in Russia fully knows how it happened".
"After the first European match against Italy, our defender, Elseid Hysaj, received a lot of criticism from the fans. Not only the fans but also the media have put pressure on him. After the match with Croatia, I wanted to support him and went with him to the fans' stand, so that the fans would accept him, support him and share the moment of joy with him. They then handed him the speaker and I was close. Then the speaker was in my hands and I said those words. In matches like that, fans often allow themselves to make offensive calls to fans of other countries. This atmosphere accompanies you during the match and grips you. It affects everyone in the stadium. That game had an emotional ending – we scored the equalizer in the last minute and I made my European debut. So the emotions were very high. But that doesn't excuse me. Immediately afterwards I realized what I had done: I had said inappropriate things. I was shocked that I allowed my emotions to overtake me and that I allowed myself to do such things," the red-and-black striker stated.
Daku emphasizes that he had not said anything about Serbia. In fact, he is heard insulting Macedonian Serbs.
"Most importantly, I should not have said such words to any people. It is simply unacceptable. It's a horrible act and it doesn't stand me in good stead. After what happened, the Serbian federation has not sent an official complaint to UEFA. There was no specific complaint against me. But I repeat that the situation does not put me in a good position. I am sorry and apologize to everyone who was hurt by this action", said Daku.
He has stated that he has good and even friendly relations with the Serbian players of Rubin Kazan. He understands the club's decision to punish him and says it is logical.
"I have been given a short break after gathering with the national team. We have to focus on work. I will try to prove to everyone that this will not happen to me in the future", said Daku.
