The biggest surprise of the group stage at this World Cup was undoubtedly Mexico. Although it was one of the three host countries of the tournament, it was considered a lesser favorite compared to the USA and Canada, and it had arrived at this competition without many expectations.
However, on the field, the Mexican team defied all expectations. Mexico won all three of their Group A matches, finishing the group stage in first place with full points and without conceding a single goal.
With this performance, Mexico joins a very special group of teams in World Cup history. Previously, only the Netherlands in 1974, Brazil in 1986, Italy in 1990, Argentina in 1998 and Uruguay in 2018 had managed to finish the group stage with three wins and a clean sheet.
This success has another historical value. Mexico becomes only the second host country to achieve this feat at a World Cup. Until now, the record was held only by Italy, which had finished the group stage in the same way during the 1990 World Cup.
