The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games officially closed today with a spectacular ice hockey final, where the United States of America triumphed in a dramatic match against Canada with a score of 2-1 in overtime, thanks to Jack Hughes' decisive goal at the 1:41 mark of extra time.
This men's hockey gold medal marked the U.S.'s first return to the throne in 46 years, but it wasn't enough to pass Norway in the overall medal standings.
Norway absolutely dominated these Games, winning 18 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals, 41 in total, setting a new Olympic record for the number of gold medals in a winter edition, breaking their previous record of 16 at Beijing 2022.
This is the fourth consecutive time that the Norwegians have topped the medal table. The United States remained in second place with 12 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze, 33 in total, while the podium was completed by the Netherlands and the host country Italy with 10 gold medals each. Italy, as the host, had a successful edition with a total of 30 medals, 10 gold, 6 silver and 14 bronze, marking its best historical performance at the Winter Games.
In the alpine skiing disciplines, Switzerland dominated with 4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals, leaving behind Italy and the USA with 2 gold each.
In total, 2,871 athletes from 92 countries participated in these Games, holding 116 competitions from February 6 to February 22, 2026 in various areas of northern Italy, Milan, Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Albania and Kosovo were present, but did not achieve medals. For Albania, Lara Colturi competed, who ranked 16th in Giant Slalom and 10th in Slalom, Denni Xhepa 34th in Super-G and Giant Slalom, Semire Dauti and Lisa Brunga also participated, but without high results. For Kosovo, Kiana Kryeziu competed in three alpine disciplines but was eliminated, as well as Drin Kokaj in one discipline.
The closing ceremony took place this evening at the Verona Arena, with a magical spectacle that marked the end of the edition and the passing of the baton to the French Alps for the 2030 Winter Games.
