Iran sentences 19-year-old athlete to death for participating in anti-government

Iran has executed three young men, including a 19-year-old wrestler, in an event that activists are calling a politically motivated killing.

Saleh Mohammadi, 19, was sentenced to death for murder in February. According to Iranian authorities, he had confessed to the crime, although sources and human rights organizations claim that the statement was obtained under torture. The execution was carried out by public hanging in the city of Qom, along with two other young men, Mehdi Ghasemi and Said Davodi, 21, in the presence of citizens.

According to Iranian state media, the three young men were arrested for participating in anti-regime protests. Authorities allege that Saleh Mohammadi and Saeed Davvodi threw Molotov cocktails at security forces in Nabutov Square in Qom, where a policeman was later found dead.

Meanwhile, Mehdi Ghasemi is accused of killing another officer during a separate protest. All three defendants have denied the charges, but the court has accepted as evidence statements given during interrogation.

Human rights activists have cast doubt on the investigative and judicial process, highlighting the use of torture and the lack of a fair trial. They link the case to a broader pattern by Iranian authorities to crack down on protesters and public figures critical of the regime.

Saleh Mohammadi was only 18 years old at the time of his arrest. He had represented Iran at the Saytiev Cup 2024 international tournament in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, where he won the bronze medal.

Iranian athletes and activists have called his execution a political act, raising concerns about the use of the justice system as a tool of repression against opponents of the regime.
