England could be forced to replace one of the clubs that have secured European competition for the 2025-2026 season. Crystal Palace will hold an emergency meeting with UEFA tomorrow to clarify the situation, as they risk expulsion under club ownership regulations.
UEFA prohibits clubs that belong to the same owners who have decision-making power from participating in the same activity and in this case, Crystal Palace, which is owned by a group of investors, is in big trouble. The club secured participation in the Europa League after winning the FA Cup by defeating Manchester City in the final. But shareholder John Textor also owns Olympique Lyonnais, which participates in the same activity. One solution would be for Palace to be delegated to the Conference League, but that is where the Brondby club, which is owned by another shareholder, David Blitzer, is.
Thus, Crystal Palace risk being eliminated from Europe altogether, in their historic debut year, having never before participated in the group stage of a major tournament. If Crystal Palace are eliminated, their place will be taken by Brighton, ironically one of their historic rivals.
