Bayern will have to close the entire south stand to its fans in their next home Champions League match. However, the punishment imposed by UEFA was significantly less drastic.
After repeatedly using pyrotechnic devices in the south stand during home matches in the Champions League, Bayern have been fined 50,000 euros and sentenced to the partial closure of the Allianz Arena by UEFA's Disciplinary Committee. However, Bayern have now announced that the entire south stand will remain closed to Bavarian fans during their upcoming match against Union Saint-Julien in Belgium on January 21.
" Since Bayern's home games do not use block ticket sales in the lower tier of the south stand and all 9,336 tickets for blocks 109-117 are valid, it is technically impossible for the club to selectively cancel only the 4,800 tickets for blocks 111-114 ," the club explained on its official website.
For this reason, all tickets for the South Stand will be cancelled and the ticket price will be refunded. Chief executive Jan-Christian Dresen had harshly criticised the fans immediately after the match against Sporting Lisbon. Initially, the UEFA penalty was suspended. However, in the match in early December, flares flared up again and the penalty was imposed shortly afterwards.
“ I was even worried that the game might be stopped because of the visibility,” said a visibly irritated Dresen after the match, knowing what would follow: “It’s simply unacceptable. It’s clear what the punishment from UEFA will be. There will be a partial exclusion of fans in the south stand .” The Bayern boss could not explain how pyrotechnics get into the stadium despite constant checks: “ Apparently, they are creative enough to achieve this from time to time. We see this all the time in other stadiums .”
