It would be 70 years before Newcastle finally won a major trophy in England.
The "Coals" defeated Liverpool 2-1 at "Wembley" and won the EFL Cup trophy, also known as the Carabao Cup, for the first time.
The last time Newcastle won a trophy in England was in 1955, when they beat Manchester City 3-2 in the FA Cup final. As for today's final, the "Coals" dominated from start to finish and took a well-deserved victory against a very weak Liverpool, perhaps their weakest match of the year.
The first goal of the match came at the end of the first half, it was Dan Byrne who scored with a header after the ball came from a corner kick, and it was precisely the Newcastle center back who jumped more than the others and "shook" the net, leaving even Liverpool's defenders in oblivion.
Newcastle doubled their lead early in the second half, courtesy of the usual Alexander Isak. Liverpool pulled one back with a 95th-minute goal from Federico Chiesa, who scored after a Harvey Elliott assist. It took VAR intervention to confirm the Italian's goal.
