The issue of the famous kiss that Luis Rubiales gave to footballer Jenni Hermoso has returned to the spotlight. The former president of the Spanish Football Federation claims that he had her consent when he kissed her in 2023.
Four months after his sexual assault conviction was upheld on appeal and he was found guilty, he published a book, "Killing Rubiales," in which he claims to have been a victim.
Rubiales later explained his position in an interview with the program “El Chiringuito.” The former president continues to deny the allegations and justifies his appeal to the Supreme Court:
“ Yes, I have appealed the decision. When a decision is made, we all have an obligation to respect it. We believe it was not sexual assault and we have the right to appeal. It was described as a ‘non-consensual kiss’. The hearing is currently suspended. The case should be brought before the Supreme Court. There must be sexual intent in the kiss. This should be clearly stated in the decision. We have arguments to support the claim that it was an unlawful act, but not a crime .”
According to him, Jenny Hermoso had accepted a kiss on live television at the awards ceremony podium.
“ It was a mistake, I didn’t behave properly. From that point on, everything that happened, things were twisted, pushed to the extreme… It’s more than I deserved. I stand by what I said. I apologize, I apologize again. As president, I should have been calmer, more professional. But I’m not apologizing to Jenny Hermoso because I asked her and she said, ‘Okay.’ She and I know that the decision is false. I’m not going to change my initial testimony like she did. It was a hot kiss, without any sexual connotations. She was a good friend .”
He once again denies that he pressured the footballer during the flight home to cover up the scandal.
“ I spoke to her on the plane,” he explains. “I told her we both had to testify and say what we said. She refused. People said there had been pressure and we asked for the video to prove otherwise, but the judge didn’t see fit to release it .”
