Paris has been put on high alert ahead of the World Cup quarter-final between France and Morocco, a match that French authorities consider to pose a high risk to public order.
According to Le Parisien, the Police Prefecture has drawn up a special security plan, which includes the use of drones to monitor the most sensitive areas of the capital. The measures will come into effect from 9:00 p.m., one hour before the start of the challenge.
As part of the plan, the use of fireworks and pyrotechnics has been banned. At the same time, the Champs-Élysées area will be under the supervision of 5,000 police forces, as it has been the scene of incidents and acts of vandalism after important matches in the past. To protect property, some businesses have put up barriers in front of their windows.
To avoid large gatherings of fans, authorities have decided to close several metro stations in the Champs-Élysées area, as well as stops along lines 6, 8, 9, 12 and 14.
The tight security measures also come as a result of the 2022 World Cup experience. After the semi-final between France and Morocco in Qatar, celebrations in several French cities were accompanied by clashes and riots. At that time, according to authorities, over 260 people were arrested across France, with 167 arrests made in Paris alone.
There are around 300,000 people of Moroccan origin living in Paris, while the Moroccan community throughout France is estimated at around 2.2 million inhabitants. For this reason, the police have increased their presence on the ground and have imposed extraordinary security measures, with the aim of preventing any incidents and guaranteeing the normal development of the sports evening.
