According to German daily Die Welt, Jurgen Klopp is close to being appointed as the new coach of the German national team. The deal is expected to run until the end of the 2030 World Cup, and could be finalized during a meeting in New York.
It is reported that the president of the German Football Association (DFB), Bernd Neuendorf, and the president of the German Football League, Hans-Hokim Vacke, will travel to the United States this weekend to discuss and finalize the final details of the contract with the former Liverpool coach.
According to Die Welt, Klopp is expected to sign a four-year contract, which will give him the opportunity to lead Germany to the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup. He is expected to receive a slightly higher salary than his predecessor, Julian Nagelsmann, who reportedly earned up to 7 million euros per year. However, the German media emphasizes that the financial aspect has not been decisive in the negotiations.
One of the main issues has been Klopp's relationship with the Red Bull Group, where he currently holds the position of Global Director of Football with a contract that runs until 2029. According to reports, there will be no compensation for the early termination of this contract. Klopp is expected to continue his cooperation with Red Bull in the role of brand ambassador, a solution that is considered more valuable for both parties.
As for the technical staff, Klopp's first assistant is expected to be Peter "Piet" Kraujec, his long-time collaborator from his time at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. Meanwhile, the second assistant is expected to be Dutchman Pepijn Lijnders, Klopp's former deputy at Liverpool, who most recently was part of Pep Guardiola's staff at Manchester City.
Even the issues related to sponsorships seem to be on the verge of being resolved. According to “Die Welt”, Klopp has no conflicts with the main commercial partners of the German Football Association, while his personal contract with Adidas will end after the 2026 World Cup and will not be renewed.
If the deal is finalized, Klopp's first public engagement as Germany coach is expected to be in attendance at the German Super Cup between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, scheduled to take place on August 22.
The meeting in New York is expected to serve not only to finalize the details of the sports project, but also to strengthen the relationship between Klopp and the DFB leaders. According to "Die Welt", this would repeat a precedent from 2004, when the German Federation formalized the agreement with Jurgen Klinsmann to lead the national team in the same city.
If the appointment is officially confirmed, Jurgen Klopp will become the 13th coach in the history of the German national team.
