An exhibition on the life and activity of Paolo Rossi (1956-2020), the former champion striker of Italy who passed away three years ago at the age of 64, was opened this Thursday in Tirana, in the premises of the National Museum. In addition to Rosi's items, in this exhibition (from February 1-24) there will also be objects of world and Albanian football legends.
Present at the opening of the exhibition were well-known sports figures in the country and beyond. Among them was the well-known coach, Arrigo Saki, and the Ambassador of Italy in Albania, Fabricio Buçi.
Present at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Edi Rama did not spare jokes with former legendary coach Arrigo Saki, as he added that Rosi has made him smile with his game. He added that in the communist Albania of the years when Rosi was active, football was not only a game that lasted 90 minutes, but an opportunity to see the free world that was forbidden by the regime.
" I will speak in Italian, firstly to honor Paolo Rossi and secondly, in front of a perfectionist like Saki, I cannot leave it to the translators, who can also become "traitors". I am glad that this moment has come to open the doors, to welcome anyone who wants to see this exhibition. We here have experienced football in a very different way. We have enjoyed football and the title of Italy in 1982 differently because we were abroad, we could not travel and we could not see television, but regime propaganda. The only magically opened window was when RAI's 'dark' networks broadcast football.
For this reason, football saved us and it was allowed. That's how we used to watch RAI and football. In Albania there were two big groups with Italy and Germany and some others with other nations. We knew that in every home that had a television, there were stadium steps where the fans cheered. Football was not only the ball and the game for us, it was the image of another world. It was the chance to see a moving mirror, a forbidden dream.
Think of us and me if you were here, football stars in Italy. In those years, I used to go to a friend's house because he had a color TV. There was a TV in the kitchen and it was full of people, we can't imagine you are here. You unfairly said it was my idea, I am not part of this idea which was more yours. The idea was master Saki's. He wrote to me and told me about this idea, I felt proud to know that Saki is not an easy person and he does honors and says what he thinks. Thank you "mystery" for having this sensitivity and bringing us this exhibition. I also thank Rosi's wife and Duke for understanding my request immediately.
I also thank Gravina, the head of football in Italy, who has come to Tirana four times and has not met me. It can even happen to us mere mortals. I love Sak's persuasive power. I want to invite everyone to come and watch this exhibition. Football enters every home, at least from one family member. The strength of football is not only in what happens for 90 minutes. Football changes culture and Paolo Rossi went beyond the limits without losing his smile. He left this world with a smile and without leaving a single tattoo from the grave ," said Edi Rama.
