An England fan and seven Serbs are facing criminal charges and stadium bans during EURO 2024 after a brawl involving 150 people before Sunday's match between the two countries.
Violence in the center of Gelsenkirchen, West Germany, erupted after England fans sought to enter a restaurant packed with Serbia supporters, German police said.
An England fan was treated in hospital but was banned from attending the match at the 50,000-capacity Arena AufSchalke.
England won 1-0 after a Jude Bellingham header in the 13th minute.
Clashes at 15:45 local time led to the use of heavy equipment, including chairs and tables, and several fans, and at least one police officer was left with serious head injuries.
Police say England fans' behavior was 'excellent'
At a press conference in Gelsenkirchen, Peter Both, the police chief, said it was not clear who provoked the violence, but that eight men would face criminal proceedings.
He said: " The group of Serbian fans were already in the restaurant and obviously ate there and then a larger group of English fans tried to get into this restaurant. And that's exactly what sparked the dispute ."
" What we cannot say now, of course, in retrospect, is that the Serbs refused the entry of the English or did the English provoke the Serbs? Of course, this can hardly be clarified afterwards. The fact is that when they tried to enter the pub, there was an immediate physical fight .
He would recommend that those arrested be banned from attending tournament matches. He said: " Then we made some stops. We performed a total of about 50 identity checks. We took eight fans into custody before the match, who were then unable to watch the match ."
England will return to Gelsenkirchen at the end of the month if they win their group.
