For the first time in the history of European and world sports, a Kosovo Albanian, Astrit Hasani, has been elected president of the European Weightlifting Federation at the Electoral Assembly held in Chisinau, Moldova.
One of 6 candidates for this position, Hasani managed to triumph at the top of the European Federation, after serving there for 9 years as a member of the executive committee of this federation.
In an interview for "Top Channel" he tells the journey and support for this great achievement.
" When Albanians come together, in cooperation with the Albanian Weightlifting Federation, the Kosovo Olympic Committee, the Albanian National Olympic Committee, with the help of other colleagues from the Balkan and European countries, and I also know that Mr. Edi Rama, our Albanian Prime Minister, has influenced some countries to change their minds and vote for a Kosovo Albanian, we achieved our goal, " said Astrit Hasani, president of European Weightlifting.
Hasan's first speech as the number 1 European weightlifter was before the heads of state of Moldova, a country that does not recognize Kosovo.
" In front of the president of the European Olympic Committee, Mr. Spiros Kapralas, in front of the entire Moldovan state apparatus, the president of the Republic and everyone, a Kosovo Albanian who Moldova does not recognize Kosovo, made the solemn opening of the European Weightlifting Championship. It was a fantastic feeling, " says Hasani.
What about the Serbian Weightlifting Federation and its president, Milan Mihajlovic, who was re-elected as secretary general, what was his stance on this election?
" There is nothing he can do, he really has to implement the orders of the president of the European Weightlifting Federation, this is by constitution and statute. The European Weightlifting Federation is a European body, and if he commits any violation, there is a problem with all the delegates. He really has to implement the orders of the board of the executive committee headed by the Albanian president, Dr. Astrit Hasani ," he adds.
Meanwhile, the president of the European Weightlifting Federation is automatically also the vice president of the World Federation, where there is another vice president of Albanian origin, although not for Albania, like Pirro Dhima.
I'm very sorry to tell you that the person who lobbied a lot against me was Pirro Dhima. I'm very sorry to say it and I feel really bad and I didn't even want to mention it, but as you mentioned, he lobbied against me. But at the end of the day, politics is politics, the elections are over now and I don't want to deal with politics, I want to deal with sports and we have to move forward.
