New world record in 1500 meters

Faith Kipyegon made history at the Prefontaine Classic, as she set a new record by breaking her own world record in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:48.68, at the Wanda Diamond League in Eugene.

The World Champion and Olympic gold medalist made history last week by setting the fastest mile in history, albeit in an unofficial and unauthorized demonstration event.

Kipiegon ran the 400 meters in 1:01.61 and the 800 meters in 2:03.17, with teammate Olympic silver medalist Jessica Hull. The Australian was still a step or two behind Kipiegon on the final lap, but the world record holder accelerated to pull away.

As she raced towards the end of the race, there was no resistance to Kipiegon, who crossed the finish line in 3:48.68 to win by almost three seconds.

Ethiopia's Diribe Weltei finished in second place (3:51.44), ahead of Hull (3:52.67) and Olympic bronze medalist Georgia Hunter Bell (3:54.76).
