Delays in the game risk increasing, UEFA against expanding VAR powers

UEFA has come out against recent proposals to expand the powers of the VAR (Video assistant referee), raising concerns about the negative impact these changes could have on the flow of the game.

According to reports from The Times, the European football house does not support the intervention of VAR in new situations, such as second yellow cards, wrongly awarded corners or cases after goalkeepers save penalties. These proposals are currently under consideration by the IFAB, the body that sets football's laws.

UEFA believes such changes would cause significant delays to matches, undermining the dynamic nature of the game. Representatives of the organisation have expressed skepticism about any expansion that does not add value to clarity in decision-making but instead increases stoppage time.

UEFA has also opposed proposed changes to the penalty shootout regulations, expressing dissatisfaction that some rules have been introduced by IFAB without prior consultation, as was the case in March.

One of the most controversial changes is the new rule that provides for a corner kick to be awarded if the goalkeeper holds the ball in his hands for more than eight seconds, a measure that according to UEFA has passed without broad agreement among the governing bodies.

While the IFAB is expected to continue discussions on reviewing the role of VAR, it is clear that UEFA will seek to maintain a balance between technology and the pace of the traditional game.
