Although the first edition of the 48-team World Cup has not yet begun, FIFA has begun discussions about another possible expansion of the tournament. The 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, could feature a total of 64 participating nations.
The idea was first floated a few months ago by CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation. According to the proposal, expanding the tournament would create more space for teams that have traditionally had little opportunity to be part of world football's elite.
Initially, the proposal was seen as more of a discussion idea, but it has recently been gaining more support within FIFA's governing bodies. Officials at the organization see it as a way to increase global representation and give more countries the opportunity to participate in football's biggest event.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly stressed that the World Cup should be a “global celebration” of football, including national teams that have never been part of the final tournament. An expansion to 64 teams would significantly increase the chances for countries like Albania and many other representatives who rarely qualify.
Currently, the official structure of the 2030 World Cup remains 48 teams. However, FIFA has not yet fully finalized the organization of this edition. Final decisions are expected to be discussed after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, the final of which will take place on July 19, 2026, the day when the new world champion will be announced.
