English footballer and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been sentenced to 15 months in prison on probation by a court in Greece, in connection with an incident that occurred in August 2020 on the tourist island of Mykonos.
The court found him guilty of several criminal offences, including aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts to bribe authorities. The incident occurred during the footballer's holiday in Mykonos, where he was involved in a physical altercation with family members and subsequently spent two nights in custody.
Immediately after his arrest in 2020, Maguire stated that the conflict had started after a clash with a group of Albanians, who, according to him, had harassed his sister. This claim was questioned in the early stages of the investigation and was disputed by the prosecution in the case.
According to the prosecutor, the story about the involvement of "Albanians" was fabricated to justify the behavior of the footballer and the people accompanying him. During the examination of the evidence, the Greek authorities found no elements to support this claim.
The prosecution also stressed that Maguire had made attempts to cover up his actions during the incident.
In the initial decision in 2020, the footballer was sentenced to 21 months in prison on probation. However, after the decision was appealed, a retrial was granted, which under Greek law made the first decision invalid until the conclusion of the new trial.
In the most recent decision, the court reduced the sentence to 15 months in prison with probation.
Maguire has announced that he will appeal the decision again, aiming to clear his name. The case is expected to continue legal proceedings in the highest instances of justice in Greece.
