The International Ski and Snowboard Federation has banned South Korean skiers Han Dasom and Lee Eui-jin from the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics after technical checks found fluoride in their skis.
The FIS announced that the equipment used by Han Dasom and Lee Eui-jin in the qualifying round of the women's sprint classic tested positive for fluoride. As a result, the organizers immediately disqualified them from the competition.
Fluorine, used in the form of ski wax, has been banned by the FIS since the 2023-24 season. The substance creates water resistance and improves sliding on snow. The marine industry initially used it to coat sailboats, and in the 1980s it moved to the ski sport to increase speed in competitions.
In this case, the test did not identify a prohibited substance in the athletes' bodies, but in the sports equipment prepared by the technicians for the competitions in Lago di Tesero. The FIS applied the regulation on the prohibition of fluoride in materials and not the biological doping regulation.
The decision brought the role of chemical compounds used in the preparation of skis back to the center of discussion. National teams invest in laboratories and technical facilities to test dozens of permitted combinations. The Italian team, for example, has a truck with over 500 types of authorized pomades, which technicians select in collaboration with the athletes for each specific competition.
The case of Han Dasom and Lee Eui-jin marks one of the most direct applications of the fluoride ban that the FIS put into effect from the 2023-24 season, shifting the focus of control from the athlete's body to the materials they use on the track.
