Sturla Holm Laegreid won the bronze medal in biathlon and immediately after the race made a personal statement that shifted the focus from the sporting result to his private life. With tears in his eyes, he publicly admitted that he had cheated on his girlfriend.
The confession took place in the presence of international media, at a moment that should have focused on the competition and the winners.
His ex-partner reacted to the Norwegian tabloid VG. She chose to remain anonymous and stated that she will not forgive him.
" It will be difficult to forgive him, even after declaring my love to the whole world. I did not choose to be in this position and it hurts me to have to deal with it. We have spoken and he knows my opinion on this matter ," she told VG.
Her statement confirms that the matter is closed on a personal level, despite the public exposure it received.
The Norwegian biathlon team then released an official statement from Laegreid. The athlete admitted that he had chosen the wrong moment to raise a private issue and publicly apologized to his teammate, Johan-Olav Botn, who won the gold medal in the same event.
" I am very sorry that I brought up this personal story on what was a joyous day for Norwegian biathlon. I am not myself and I cannot think straight. My feelings go out to Johan-Olav, who deserved all the attention after winning the gold medal. And also to my ex-girlfriend, who unwittingly found herself in the media spotlight. I hope she is okay. I can't go back, but I will put this story behind me now and focus on the Olympics. I will not answer any more questions about this ," Laegreid declared.
With this stance, the athlete announced that he considers the public issue closed and will focus on preparations for the Olympic Games. The statements remain documented in the post-race interview and in the official press release of the Norwegian team.
