"Lusitanian" spectacle, Portugal secures the World Cup without Ronaldo

The final qualifying matches in Group F for the 2026 World Cup have been played. Portugal won 9-1 against Armenia, in the match played at the “Estádio do Dragão” in Porto.

Renato Veiga opened the scoring in the 6th minute, heading home a Bruno Fernandes free kick. The Armenians equalized in the 17th minute with Spertsian, after a quick and beautiful move.

The Portuguese responded quickly, Gonçalo Ramos scoring the second goal in the 27th minute, after a ball was incorrectly turned back by the Armenians. Two minutes later, Joao Neves shook the net with a beautiful right-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area. In the 41st minute, Joao Neves executed a perfect free kick and scored his second personal goal of the first half and the fourth for the Portuguese. Bruno Fernandes scored the fifth goal at the end of the first half, from the penalty spot.

Bruno Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the second half, scoring two more goals, one from the penalty spot. Joao Neves also completed his hat-trick with a third personal goal in the 80th minute, which was the Portuguese's eighth goal of the match. Francisco Conceicao sealed the 9-1 victory with his goal in extra time.

Portugal qualified for the 6th consecutive World Cup, although not with captain Cristiano Ronaldo on the field.

In the next match, Ireland defeated Hungary 2-3 away thanks to Parrot's hat-trick. With this victory, the Irish secured the "play off". Good news for Albania, as it has a chance to be better positioned than Ireland in the FIFA rankings. The calculations are then made as to which team will be placed in the second pot.
