The World Cup in the United States did not become the grand tournament for the new generation of footballers, despite the high expectations that accompanied names like Lamine Yamal, Endrick, Jamal Musiala and Arda Güler. Instead of being the main protagonists, many of the most talked-about talents remained in the background, while more experienced players like Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé took the spotlight.
One of the biggest disappointments of the tournament was Lamine Yamal. Although Spain were crowned world champions, the 18-year-old failed to make the expected impact. He finished the World Cup with just one goal, against Saudi Arabia, and an assist in the semi-final against France. During the tournament, Yamal himself admitted that he was not at his best, while his performances were also affected by a left thigh injury suffered at the end of the season with Barcelona.
Endrick also failed to make a mark. The Brazilian Real Madrid striker was only used four times, always from the bench, accumulating few minutes on the field. Coach Carlo Ancelotti's decision not to give him a bigger role was widely commented on and became the subject of discussion on social networks.
Jamal Musiala also fell short of expectations. The German midfielder, returning from a serious injury, failed to be decisive for the German national team and finished the tournament with just one goal.
Arda Güler also failed to lead Turkey to a successful run. The Real Madrid talent scored just one goal in the group stage, in a match that had no impact on qualification. Although he was considered one of the potential candidates to win the Ballon d'Or in the future before the World Cup, his performances did not meet expectations.
Meanwhile, Joao Neves, one of the revelations of the season with PSG, failed to repeat the same level with the Portuguese national team. The midfielder was also involved in controversy after his statement about Cristiano Ronaldo, when he said that the captain "is not different from the rest of the team", a comment that caused numerous reactions among Portuguese fans.
