World Cup craze: more than 150 million requests for tournament tickets

The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest and richest tournament in football history, including the revenue for FIFA and the prizes it will distribute to the finalist teams.

Not only that, the World Cup finals will also be hard on the pockets of fans who want to follow the matches in the stadium.

But criticism and controversy from fan groups, after some federations published ticket prices for their national team matches, seem to have had no effect.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the financial policy for tickets, citing the high demand for them and the revenue generated for the sport worldwide.

According to him, there are more than 6 million tickets on sale, but demand has exceeded all expectations. In the first 15 days alone, after FIFA opened the ticket portal, there were more than 150 million requests.

Fans from the US have the highest number of requests, followed by those from Germany and the United Kingdom.

"What is essential is that the income generated from this is returned to the game around the world. Without FIFA there would be no football in 150 countries around the world. There is football because, and thanks to, these revenues that we generate with and from the World Cup, which we reinvest around the world," Infantino said.

The finals of the "2026 World Cup" will be played in the USA, Mexico and Canada starting on June 11, while the grand final is scheduled for July 19.
