More VAR interventions are expected on the pitch soon. According to The Times, FIFA is considering increasing the powers of the Video Assistant Referee; at the next World Cup, referees and their assistants could also be corrected in cases of corner kicks or second yellow cards.
Over the years, the VAR system has been used to signal many cases of arbitrary errors in the awarding of corner kicks or second yellow cards that have influenced, if not decided, the outcome of a match. For this reason, FIFA is seeking a special exemption for the World Cup to allow for modifications to be made regarding these decisions.
IFAB, the international referees' organisation, will discuss these proposals in January; in the case of the second yellow card, the revision enjoys broad support and is likely to be approved, while there are many doubts regarding corner kicks, especially due to the fact that it risks increasing the interruption of the game and, according to 'The Times', UEFA is against such an intervention.
Proposals for penalties and offside positions
But in the coming months, it will not only be the modifications to the VAR protocol that will be discussed. Among the new proposals will be those for modifications to the regulations for penalties and offside. The idea for the penalty is to stop the game at the moment when the goalkeeper intercepts the 11-meter shot, canceling the subsequent attempt and limiting the problem of other players entering the area. In the case of offside, there is a move towards eliminating the so-called millimeter positions. The most concrete hypothesis is that a footballer will be considered offside only if part of his chest crosses the line of the last defender, a proposal that is still far from finding a formula that can convince.
