A former England and Premier League player has been arrested at Stansted Airport after being wanted in connection with an investigation into an attempted sexual assault on a former partner.
The athlete, who cannot be publicly identified for legal reasons, was stopped at passport control after the security system triggered a search warrant. According to authorities, Border Force agents stopped him before he could board a flight on Sunday evening, and Essex Police later arrested him at the scene.
The case is related to a complaint made a few weeks ago by a former partner of the footballer, who has given her statements to specialists and is receiving the appropriate support.
After the arrest, the suspect was escorted to the police station for standard identification procedures and then released on bail, while the investigation remains active.
Essex Police confirmed: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been released on bail until the end of February 2026. Investigations are ongoing.”
According to sources, the arrest has caused reactions, as the player had participated in several public activities recently, despite the search warrant.
