Tribunes carved into the rock, the extraordinary stadium in the middle of the

Football has developed greatly in the Middle East in the last decade or so, and one of the earliest attempts to make a mark on the sport came from the proposed 'Rock Stadium' in the United Arab Emirates.

Since the Qatar 2022 World Cup, football in the Middle East has seen its influence grow tremendously with the rise of the Saudi Pro League boosted by the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo.

This has not just happened overnight, as the wheels have been in motion for quite some time as Asia tries to compete with European football on the global stage.

One of the earliest attempts to shake up the football world came in 2016, after the United Arab Emirates government drew up a plan to build a special stadium in the Jebel Hafeet mountains.

The design concept featured a unique structure with three massive trapezoidal shapes nested within each other. This arrangement creates a place with a partially open roof, allowing natural light and fresh air to flow in, while also containing the atmosphere of the public.

The stadium would have been able to hold up to 40,000 fans, which could be considered too small, however, many World Cup venues have had a smaller capacity.

The design is said to have been influenced by the ancient architecture of Rome, Greece and Egypt. The concept was to create a terrain that perfectly combined modern and ancient building styles.

However, despite the region's wealth, the proposed stadium was ultimately deemed too large for the project's ambitions.

The founder, Mr. Zgheib wanted the stadium to be finished using only local materials, which complicated the construction process. This approach led to scaling and timing challenges, causing significant delays and budget overruns.

As a result, the project faced significant setbacks and there has been little or no news regarding its continuation or completion, but it has not yet been officially cancelled.

One thing is for sure, if the magnificent structure is ever completed, it would be a spectacle.
