The government's intervention in the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has shaken the institutions of world football. FIFA has been closely monitoring all the moves and considers, as announced in a statement agreed with UEFA a few days ago, that an urgent solution had to be found to what is happening today in one of its most powerful federations .
All this also due to the fact that Spain, together with Portugal and Morocco, will organize the 2030 World Cup. The current heads of the RFEF admit that they have not spoken to UEFA, but now they know the risk.
UEFA are not so optimistic about what happened. In Nion, they consider that government intervention violates FIFA laws and that it is very difficult to differentiate this case from others that happened years ago in different federations.
Although FIFA is ultimately the arbiter of the power to sanction its affiliated members, UEFA can also take action on the matter, as it did with Russia, which it excluded from all its tournaments before FIFA made its move. This is determined by the statutes of UEFA competitions, which include the European Championship, the Champions League, the Europa League and the Conference League.
All, as the AS has learned, would now be at risk for Spain if it is confirmed that the political intervention contravenes the aforementioned statutes. UEFA does not accept government interference in any of their federations.
