Argentine justice has formally declared as defendants the president of the Football Federation Claudio Tapia and the chief treasurer Pablo Tovigino as part of an investigation into the alleged crime of failing to declare social security and other taxes.
The proceedings were initiated by a complaint from the country's General Directorate of Taxes and concern the non-payment of more than 19 billion pesos ($13 million) in the last two years. The alleged irregularities relate to VAT, income tax and pension contributions in the period March 2024-September 2025.
Argentine law provides that the punishment for these crimes ranges from 2 to 6 years in prison. According to the prosecutor's office, considering the financial dimensions of the Argentine Football Federation and the amount of money being investigated, the investigation could be extended to other members of the Board of Directors of this institution.
This is the first of three such investigations that have been opened in recent days and that involve the leaders of the Argentine Football Federation. The other investigations concern financial irregularities related to the company Sur Finanzas and the purchase of a luxury property in the province of Buenos Aires. For its part, the Argentine Football Federation has rejected the accusations and spoke of a coordinated attack by the government of President Javier Milli. The clashes between the Argentine government and the Football Federation have been ongoing for more than 1 year and have been further inflamed by the government's project to introduce the joint-stock company model to the world of football, a hypothesis that has so far been rejected by the Argentine Football Federation and most football clubs.
