AEK president Marios Iliopoulos has reacted sharply after the team's unexpected elimination by OFI of Crete in the Greek Cup, imposing a fine of 400 thousand euros on the first team players.
According to the decision of the club's main shareholder, the players will only avoid paying the fine if they manage to win three consecutive games in the championship: against Panathinaikos at home, against Asteras Tripolis on the road and against Olympiacos again at home. With this measure, Iliopoulos wanted to send a clear message to the players that defeats and disappointing performances are accompanied by concrete consequences, even though he had recently distributed bonuses after a big victory for the team.
In a meeting with the team, the AEK owner spoke to the players in strict tones, including Albanian goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha, describing the result against OFI as “unacceptable and without any alibi.” He stressed that the upcoming decisive matches are a real test of the team’s character and quality.
" Yesterday's result is unacceptable. You should have won that match. I will not postpone the fine like other times: it will definitely be paid if we do not win the next three matches ," Iliopoulos is reported to have declared.
A significant portion of the fine will be allocated to AEK amateur, in order to support the athletes who represent the club in amateur sports, despite financial difficulties. Meanwhile, the remaining portion will be donated to a charity selected by OFI, as a sign of respect for the victory achieved honestly in an elimination match.
At the end of his speech, Iliopoulos expressed that he still believes in the players and invited them to show passion, self-confidence and dedication on the field, turning this failure into a starting point for AEK's future successes.
