Barcelona drew 1-1 with Newcastle in the last minutes of the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. In addition to the result on the pitch, an unusual episode involving a Catalan fan attracted attention in England.
According to English club Exeter City, a Barcelona fan mistakenly ended up at their stadium, which is also called "St James Park", thinking he had arrived at Newcastle's stadium where the Champions League match was taking place.
The fan had travelled over 1,000 miles to watch the Barcelona-Newcastle clash up close. However, it was only after he showed his ticket to stadium staff that he realised he had gone to the wrong city and stadium.
At the same time, Exeter City were playing their home game against Lincoln City in League One. The club's staff decided to offer the fan a free ticket to watch the match at the stadium.
" It was a tale of two cities and two very different football grounds for a Barcelona fan who turned up at the wrong stadium, St James' Park, last night. It was only when he showed his ticket to staff that he realised his mistake ," Exeter City said in a statement.
The club added that, despite the confusion, the fan was able to attend a football match after Exeter City staff provided him with a ticket for the match against Lincoln City under the lights of their St James' Park stadium.
