UEFA has decided to punish Real Madrid with a fine of 15,000 euros and the partial closure of the stadium, due to racist and discriminatory behavior by some fans during the match against Benfica.
According to the decision made public by the European football governing body, the Madrid club must temporarily close part of the southern stand of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, specifically around 500 seats in the lower southern stand, during its next home match in a UEFA competition.
However, UEFA has clarified that this decision has been suspended for a one-year trial period. This means that the closure of part of the stadium will only be implemented if a similar violation occurs during this period.
The official statement reads: “Real Madrid CF is fined 15,000 euros and ordered to partially close its stadium (500 seats in the lower south stand) for the upcoming match in a UEFA club competition, due to racist and/or discriminatory behavior by fans.”
However, the European body emphasizes that the disciplinary measure has been suspended for one year, making it applicable only in the event of a recurrence of similar incidents.
This is a standard mechanism that UEFA uses in disciplinary cases, giving the club the opportunity to avoid the full implementation of the sanction if no further violations occur during the probationary period.
