UEFA's Appeal Committee has rejected Galatasaray's request to overturn the disciplinary sanctions, upholding the decision that the Turkish club's fans will not be allowed to travel to the match against Liverpool in England. The first leg of the Champions League round of 16 will take place on Tuesday at Anfield Road.
The decision comes after incidents recorded during last week's match in Turin against Juventus.
According to reports, Galatasaray fans were involved in several incidents during their stay in Italy. They allegedly threw objects and set off fireworks in the stadium stands.
The most serious incident, according to media reports, involved the injury of a Juventus fan and his daughter after a firecracker was thrown towards the home fans' section.
These incidents were considered serious breaches of UEFA's disciplinary rules.
Disciplinary measures against Galatasaray include:
Ban on ticket sales to away fans for the match against Liverpool in England.
A fine of 40 thousand euros, imposed by the UEFA Disciplinary Committee.
Rejection of the appeal, after the Appeals Committee decided to uphold the sentence.
This means that the Turkish team will travel to England without the support of its fans in the stands at Anfield Road.
The match between Juventus and Galatasaray in Turin was one of the most dramatic in the Champions League this season. Juventus, despite playing with 10 men, managed to overturn a 5-2 first-leg defeat and take the match to extra time.
However, in extra time, the Turkish team responded by scoring two goals and secured qualification for the round of 16 with an aggregate score of 7-5.
After a dramatic qualification, Galatasaray will now focus on facing Liverpool. The first leg will be played on Tuesday at Anfield Road, where a ban on away fans will be enforced.
Meanwhile, the return match, which will decide the team that advances to the quarterfinals, is scheduled to take place in Istanbul on March 18.
