Investigators are trying to determine how and why a deadly New Year's Eve fire in Crans-Montana spread so quickly, claiming 40 lives.
Swiss authorities said fireworks placed in champagne bottles were the cause of the blaze. But the way the flames spread so quickly, killing at least 40 people and injuring 119, many of them seriously, is now a major concern for officials, as is the bar's safety record.
The 49-year-old French owner and manager of the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Jacques Moretti, broke his silence for the first time after the tragedy that occurred on New Year's Eve.
He stated that both he and his 40-year-old wife, Jessica, are in a state of shock, while emphasizing that the bar had been searched three times over the past ten years.
In a statement to the Swiss newspaper "20 Minuten", Moretti said: "We can't sleep or eat. We are all in a very bad state."
Jacques and Jessica Moretti, French citizens originally from Corsica, took over Le Constellation in 2015. A friend of the couple confirmed to several media outlets that both are alive, denying rumors that circulated in the first hours after the event.
According to information, on the night of the fire, Jessica Moretti was inside the bar and was injured, suffering burns to her hand. Meanwhile, Jacques Moretti was not there, as he was at another of the couple's businesses in the area.
Moreti announced that he will fully cooperate with the authorities to clarify the causes of the tragedy.
"We will do everything in our power to assist the investigations. Our lawyers are also involved in this process," he declared.
Swiss authorities emphasize that the principle of the presumption of innocence applies. The Valais cantonal prosecutor's office has launched a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the fire, while the restaurant's administrators have already given their testimony. It is not yet known whether specific charges will be filed, but the possibility of an investigation into arson and manslaughter is being considered.
On the other hand, the newspaper Le Nouvelliste reports that Jacques Moretti had personally undertaken a significant part of the reconstruction work of the bar.
"I did almost everything myself," he is quoted as saying earlier.

It is suspected that the fire started in the basement, while videos show people trying to escape through a narrow staircase, which may have become a fatal blockage point during the panic.
Officials confirm that the building had more than one exit, but it is still unclear whether the emergency exit was open at the time of the fire.
Meanwhile, the two French managers of the bar have been questioned by authorities, along with some of the people who managed to escape. One of the owners told local media that the bar had been inspected three times in the last ten years and that everything was in accordance with the rules.
Investigators have also discovered that fireworks placed on bottles had been used earlier at this bar, at least since 2024, according to videos published online.
Investigations continue, while authorities are expected to clarify responsibilities and the exact causes of the tragedy.
