National Food Authority

The National Food Authority (AKU) has blocked 130 tons of livestock corn in the Shkodra region, after analyses found a high presence of aflatoxin, a substance dangerous to food safety.

In an official announcement, the AKU announced that after the contamination of the product was detected, legal measures were immediately taken to block the quantity, while field inspections conducted during March 2026 also revealed serious violations by the business operator.

According to the institution, the subject acted in violation of the law, intentionally breaking security signs (blocking tapes) and moving the quantity of blocked corn without traceability documentation.

For these violations, the NFA has taken four administrative measures with fines against the subject and has filed a criminal report with the justice authorities for the following offenses:

-intentional destruction of safety signs,
-placing dangerous foods into circulation,
-fraud with food products.

Meanwhile, the institution has also initiated disciplinary proceedings against three inspectors of the AKU Regional Directorate in Shkodra, due to suspicions of dereliction of duty during the inspection process.

The National Food Authority emphasizes that the integrity of the control process is non-negotiable, while ensuring that its structures will continue controls to guarantee food safety.

In its official response, the AKU also evaluates the role of the media in denouncing abusive cases, calling on reporters to rely on official facts to avoid misinformation and creating unjustified panic among citizens.

The institution emphasizes that it remains fully prepared to protect public health, warning of strict measures against any entity that violates food safety rules.

"The National Food Authority, in the context of public information and transparency, clarifies the public opinion that, after ascertaining the presence of aflatoxin in a quantity of livestock corn in the Shkodra region, all legal measures were immediately taken to block the product, while the latest field controls carried out in March 2026 have revealed serious violations by the business operator. This entity has acted in open violation of the law by intentionally breaking the safety signs (blocking strips) and moving the unsafe quantity without any traceability documentation, actions for which the NFA has reacted with full determination by imposing four administrative measures "Fines" and by filing a criminal report with the justice authorities for intentional breaking of safety signs, placing dangerous foods in circulation and fraud with food products.

Also, the institution has shown a high willingness to hold responsibilities within its own structures, by initiating disciplinary proceedings against three DRAKU Shkodra inspectors for dereliction of duty, as the integrity of the inspection process is non-negotiable.

While we appreciate the role of the media in denouncing abusive cases, we invite all reporters to refer to official facts to avoid misinformation and unfounded panic among citizens.

"The National Food Authority assures consumers that it remains fully prepared in its mission to guarantee food safety and protect public health in any case and against any entity that attempts to ignore the law ," the NFA statement said.
