Road safety expert, Fatmir Hasho, has raised the alarm about the accident situation in the country, following the tragic incident in Durrës where two children lost their lives and another was seriously injured.
He stated that the number of victims on the road remains high and worrying. "In three weeks, 23 Albanian citizens. It is alarming. Even in war, so many people are not killed," Hasho told "A2 CNN".
According to him, this situation is not new and is related to the lack of concrete changes over the years.
"The state has not moved 1 mm from the mark for years. Neither the roads nor the signage have had enough impact, as long as we have this number of incidents," the expert said.
Hasho emphasized that the deterioration of driver behavior is a major factor in the increase in accidents.
"Albanians are very aggressive behind the wheel. Powerful cars, high speeds and the use of alcohol and drugs have worsened the situation," he declared.
Commenting on the accident in Durrës, he said that the driver of the vehicle was drunk and had previous convictions. According to him, residents' concerns about the driver's dangerous behavior were not addressed in a timely manner by institutions.
"We need to see where the response of local institutions and the police has failed, when such behavior has been reported earlier," Hasho added.
