News edition

We invite you to follow a news block with the main developments from the black chronicle, where among other things we highlight:

The Supreme Court has made a decision with a direct impact on criminal practice in Albania, changing the way the most severe security measure, “prison arrest,” is determined. According to this decision, this measure cannot be used automatically and should remain exceptional, only when there is no other suitable alternative.

According to the new standard, the prosecution is obliged to prove with concrete arguments why the isolation of a person is necessary. On the other hand, the courts are obliged to realistically consider lighter measures such as "house arrest", "compulsion to appear" or other restrictive measures, and to explain in the decision why these are not sufficient in the specific case.

In other developments of the day, the situation in the country continues to be fraught with various events. In Durrës, triggered by the tragic accident, the police chain of command has been suspended following the recent events, while the management of local structures has been temporarily reorganized.

A fatal accident occurred in Dimal-Berat, where a 45-year-old man traveling on a motorcycle collided with a BMW vehicle driven by a 34-year-old woman, losing his life at the scene.

In the field of justice and politics, the Court of Appeal has rejected the request for a property guarantee of former President Ilir Meta, leaving in force the measure of "prison arrest". In the meantime, he continues to be in the trial process for the "Partizani" file.

Also, debates continue regarding the testimony of Judge Irena Gjoka in SPAK, following the complaint by the Democratic Party, where she denied knowledge of an old criminal decision in Greece and stated that there was no proceeding against her.

In terms of security, authorities report numerous cases of organized crime and police operations, including arrests for drug trafficking, money laundering and the capture of internationally wanted persons. Financial schemes with suspected transactions worth hundreds of thousands of euros have also been uncovered.

In the region, a serious incident at a prison in Greece has led to violent clashes between inmates, leaving two people dead and leading to the arrest of 11 others.
