Spokesman Matthew Miller told the Serbian news agency, Tanjug, that he has not been dismissed from office, but simply needs to change posts, as his term is coming to an end.
Gabriel Escobar, US Deputy Assistant Secretary, was reportedly fired from his post as special envoy for the Western Balkans region.
This claim was made by the magazine "THE FRONTLINER", which claims that Escobar was fired after news published by this media that Escobar was in a conflict of interest while casting doubts on his diplomatic integrity.
In the news published by the media on March 22, 2024, it was alleged that Escobar's family had financial ties with Serbian government bodies, calling into question his neutrality in the dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
But this news that Escobar has been fired has been denied by DASH. Spokesman Matthew Miller told the Serbian news agency, Tanjug, that he has not been dismissed from office, but simply needs to change posts, as his term is coming to an end.
"All career diplomats abroad are rotated every one to four years, which is a regular practice. As a diplomatic officer, Escobar has been in his current position for three years and is scheduled to move on to his next assignment in in the following weeks. Until the transition takes place, he will remain in the position of deputy assistant secretary in the Office for European and Eurasian Affairs, as well as the Special Envoy for the Western Balkans," states DASH's response to Tanjug.
Escobar was appointed in 2021 and knows the situation in the Balkans very well. He speaks several languages, including Serbian, and since 1998 he has held successive positions in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro.
