Myopia is one of the most common diseases in children as they spend more and more time in front of screens of electronic devices, such as phones, tablets, and computers.
According to ophthalmologists, out of every 10 children who go for an eye check-up, 3 of them end up with myopia problems, and this is a serious and growing concern since regular eye check-ups for children are extremely important.
They say that one phenomenon that has changed in recent years is that previously, many children suffered from hyperopia (problems with near vision), while now more and more are facing myopia, or problems with distant vision.
"After the introduction of digital devices, such as phones and tablets, the trend of eye problems in children began to change. From hyperopia, we found that in children's visits, 2 to 3 children came out with myopia or myopic astigmatism. As the child's body grows, the axis of the eye changes and the problem changes due to fatigue of the eye muscles. We are dealing with tired eyes, irritated eyes, eyes that complain of dryness, and eyes that may also have increased tearing. If the child has started to stay too close to the television, this is a sign of myopia," says ophthalmologist Suzana Zhuka.
Doctors advise that spending time in front of electronic devices should be limited to a maximum of 30 minutes. The radiation from these devices can cause irreparable damage to the eye, contributing to the development of vision problems, such as myopia.
For this reason, it is very important that every year, students of all ages have an eye exam to identify any vision problems they may have, and to take appropriate measures to avoid more serious consequences in the future.
