Two days after the cyberattack on the digital system of the Municipality of Tirana, an official response has come from the acting mayor, Anuela Ristani. In a public announcement, she describes the intrusion as one of the most sophisticated attacks recorded so far, but emphasizes that there was no damage to data or the overall functioning of services.
"The system was hit through the compromise of a genuine Microsoft license, showing a high level of coordination and sophistication," Ristani stated, underlining that this is the 15th similar attack in just six months by Iranian hackers.
Although the Municipality's digital platform is not classified as critical infrastructure and is not under the direct supervision of the National Cyber Security Authority, all measures for recovery and further security have been taken. All data is intact, while only 10 out of 80 servers are under surveillance for additional security measures.
"We are moving towards further strengthening the infrastructure, in collaboration with the best security experts," said Ristani, guaranteeing citizens transparency and data protection.
The Municipality of Tirana, like other public institutions, continues to remain the target of repeated attacks, while cybersecurity challenges are becoming a daily reality.

The latest attack was carried out through the compromise of a genuine Microsoft license, which shows the high level of coordination and sophistication of this act.
I would like to emphasize that, although our platform is not classified as critical infrastructure under current legislation and is not under the direct supervision of the National Cyber Security Authority, we have taken all necessary measures for the full recovery of the systems.
All data is intact and there is no information loss.
Out of 80 total servers, 10 of them are under surveillance.
The nursery and kindergarten application and the restoration of the connection to the ANA for the permit service) are being rigorously checked to ensure that there are no malware residues before they are activated.
At this stage, we are moving towards a process of further rehabilitation and strengthening of our digital infrastructure, in collaboration with the best security experts.
