The Special Appeal of the Criminal Court of Kosovo has rejected former President Ilir Meta's request to change his security measure, leaving him in prison.
Meta requested the replacement of the security measure "prison arrest" with another, milder security measure, but this request was rejected.
"The Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime, with a monocratic panel composed of Judge Saida Dollani, today on 30.01.2026, announced the decision on criminal case no. 37, act, date 26.01.2026 registration, on the appeal of the appellant IM: "Appeal against decision no. 40/863, date 05.01.2026, of the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime, with the object:
Request for the replacement of the personal security measure "Arrest in prison" with a milder security measure than those provided for in the Code of Criminal Procedure" in cases of personal security measures, and decided:
Dismissal of the appeal filed by the defendant IM, through the defense attorney av. Gylsen Zhllima, against the disposition no. 863/40, dated 05.01.2026 of the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime. This decision shall be notified to the parties. This decision may be appealed to the High Court. Tirana, on 30.01.2026,” the court announces.
The former president's request for release from prison has been previously rejected by all three levels of the judiciary, which have decided to keep him in prison.
The leader of the Freedom Party has also addressed the Constitutional Court, claiming that the decisions of the three levels of the judiciary that have left the arrest measure in force are unconstitutional and violate the European Convention on Human Rights.
Ilir Meta has been in prison since October 2024, and is accused by SPAK of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets, in collaboration with his ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi, and 3 others.
