At the Qafë Bota border crossing, the crossing of citizens and private vehicles continues normally today. However, the crossing of vehicles requiring customs procedures, such as trucks and commercial cargo vehicles, has been temporarily suspended.
This development comes after a wide-ranging operation by Greek authorities, in which 13 Mavromatis customs officers, including its director, were arrested. The arrested are accused of bribery and abuse of office, as part of a suspected smuggling and border control evasion scheme.
According to Greek media, the investigations had been underway for several months and were based on wiretaps that documented compromised communications between customs officers and interested parties. These were cases where vehicles and trailers with smuggled goods were allowed to cross the border in exchange for illegal payments, bypassing routine checks.
The situation has brought a temporary impasse in the circulation of goods, while Greek authorities are expected to impose new measures to ensure the normal functioning of the customs point.
