A 33-year-old Albanian, declared internationally wanted, has been arrested in Colombia, in the city of Cartagena. This is Almir Gjidiaj, who was declared internationally wanted, after the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime accused him of being a member of a criminal organization for arms trafficking.
Criminalistics expert Ervin Karamuço said that Albanians involved in drug trafficking in Latin America have proven to adapt quickly to local groups. He said that Albanians are not criminal cartels, but function as organized groups that cooperate with local groups.
"We have been agile and quick to familiarize ourselves with the cartels of that area, that territory, which has enabled us to find that in every group that is captured, it turns out that we have our exponents attached. They have created communication channels, not only Albanians, but through local cartels. We are not a cartel. We are an organized group and we cooperate with the cartels. There are Serbs, Montenegrins, there are Kosovars, Bosnians, there is another part that comes mainly from the east," he said for "Abc News".
Karamuço emphasized that in addition to cocaine, weapons are also being brought to Europe. According to him, this is a new investment that the groups are making for their members, who operate and work in Europe.
"We are a structured group, on behalf of someone else, that enables us to use these types of routes. Along with drugs, weapons also come to Europe. I think it comes as a need to strengthen their exponents in Europe ," Karamuço concluded.
