EU proposes 7 'safe countries' for the return of migrants, including

The European Commission will propose 7 "safe third countries of origin" to which EU countries can return asylum seekers, according to a document seen by Euractiv.

The list includes Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kosovo, Morocco and Tunisia.

This move is expected to be followed by a swift review of the concept of safe third country in EU law.

The safe third country concept allows asylum seekers to be sent to a country where they can find protection, rather than having to remain in the country where they applied.

In March, the Commission proposed new binding rules on the return of migrants, which EU countries and MEPs are now debating.

The list will be included as an amendment to the EU's asylum procedure regulation, part of the migration pact adopted last year. It is set to come into effect in 2026.

The final list will be released before June. This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
