In February 2023, Fredi Beleri, the candidate of the coalition "Bashke Fitomje" for the head of the Municipality of Himara, started the campaign with the flag of Vorio Epiri behind his shoulders.
It was the same flag that was used, in 1914, in Gjirokastër, during the proclamation of the so-called "Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus", a flag that symbolizes territorial claims to Albanian lands.
The chosen scenography kept alive the goals of the Greek ultra-nationalist circles against Albania and the Albanians and foretold the future. It foretold the role that Fredi Beleri would play in the event that he was elected as the head of the municipality of Himara.
But on May 12, 2023, history changed. Fredi Beleri was arrested on the charge of being involved in vote buying.
The event was shocking even among the Albanians. They had negative information about Fredi Beleri. For the entire Albanian society, he was one of the possible perpetrators of the brutal crime of 1994, when an armed commando, coming from the border with Greece, attacked the ward of Peshpia, in Gjirokastër, leaving behind two soldiers killed and several injured.
It was this information that made the majority of Albanians believe and approve the actions of justice with Beler in the case of vote buying.
Beyond the Albanians' expectations, official Greece appeared revolted. The counter-response was in the form of an ultimatum: Fredi Beleri should be sworn in as the elected Mayor of Himara, otherwise Greece would block the further steps of the European integration of the Albanians.
That was enough for the images of the recent demonstrations, of an increased Albanian-Greek friendship, to fade.
The confrontation created the next ice between the two neighboring countries.
How did the events unfold, how were the opportunities created, for a character arrested and accused, among others, of involvement in terrorist acts to the detriment of the Albanian state, to have all the freedom and appropriate support to run, several times in a row , for the head of the Municipality of Himara?
How was it possible to be cleared of these serious charges that usually condition the perpetrators for the rest of their lives?
This dark part of Fredi Beleri's life story is the focus of the show CRIME STORY, authored by journalist Ferdinand Dervishi, the first part of which was broadcast today at 22:00 on Report TV.
