The Minister of Defense, Pirro Vengu, has given a preliminary assessment of the situation created by the heavy rainfall that has affected several regions of the country for four days. He spoke from the mobile center of Civil Emergencies and stated that Albania is facing a front with continuous rainfall and record intensity that has caused flooding in the western lowlands and river areas.
Vengu said that the most affected regions are Lezha, Dibra, Fieri, Berati, Korça, Gjirokastra and Vlora. He stressed that the emergency strategy is based on warning, prevention and support for residents of areas at risk. According to him, the management of the Drini cascade has avoided a situation that could turn into a disaster in the Shkodra area. The Minister reported on temporary evacuations in several municipalities. In Vlora, 52 families have been evacuated, while in the Korça region, 18 families.
" To date, the most affected areas are the regions of Lezha, DIbra, Fier, Berat, Korça, Gjirokastra and Vlora. Our strategy was based on warning; prevention and support for the residents of the most affected municipalities. On the other hand, the management of the Drini cascade, despite the large lateral flows, avoided what could have potentially turned into a disaster in the Shkodra area ," said Vengu.
According to official data, over 1,000 homes have been damaged by water intrusion. In Korça, 300 homes are reported affected. In Lezhë, 600 homes. In Fier, 25 homes and in Vlorë, 52 homes. The head of the National Civil Emergencies Agency, Haki Çako, said that most of the evacuated families have returned home after the water level stabilized. He added that residents are cleaning their homes while other families will return as soon as conditions are created.
" A significant portion of them, where optimal conditions have been created to return to their homes, have returned to their homes and are dealing with the cleaning and housing system. The rest will return once the conditions are created ," said Çako.
