Britain seeks a 'Gjadr 2.0' in the Balkans, 'BBC': Albania

At the joint press conference in Tirana, Starmer confirmed that he is in talks with several countries on this issue, but did not mention names.

On his first official visit to Albania as Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer stated that the UK is in talks with several countries to establish "return camps" abroad for asylum seekers whose asylum applications in Britain have been rejected.

According to Starmer, these individuals will be sent abroad for processing, after their application has been definitively rejected and without the right to further appeal.

However, Albania is not on the list of participating countries. Prime Minister Edi Rama clearly ruled out any involvement of Albania in this project, describing the similar agreement with Italy as a special case due to the “special relations between the two countries . ”

At the joint press conference in Tirana, Starmer confirmed that he is in talks with several countries on this issue, but did not mention names.

“We are in talks with a number of countries about setting up return centres, which I think is a very important innovation ,” Starmer said. According to the BBC, these countries are mainly in the Western Balkans, including Serbia and Bosnia, but not Albania.

The difference between this initiative and the Conservative government's previous plan for Rwanda, which was cancelled by Starmer, is that this only applies to those who have received a final rejection.

The Conservative opposition saw Rama's rejection as a humiliation for Starmer. Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said the visit was a "total fiasco" as Albania explicitly ruled out the possibility of British camps being set up on its territory.

At the same time, Starmer announced new measures for cooperation with Albania in the fight against illegal immigration and organized crime, including:

Expansion of the Joint Task Force on Migration in North Macedonia.

A new program for the reintegration of young Albanians into society and the labor market.

Investment of 1 million pounds to improve Albanian capacities in the field of forensics and biometric technology.

Building a new DNA data sharing program to capture Albanian criminals wanted in Britain.

The use of drones funded by Britain to assist in operations against traffickers in the Balkan corridor.

Starmer accused the previous British government of losing control over the borders and stressed the determination to restore control by cracking down on criminal networks that traffic people into Britain. / Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "BBC"
