Who is the Balkan prime minister who, together with Meloni, will attend President Trump's inauguration ceremony?
On Monday, January 20, the inauguration ceremony of the new US president, Donald Trump, will be held. Several leaders from around the world are expected to be present at this ceremony, unlike in other years.
Trump broke precedent and invited several foreign leaders to the ceremony. Historically, they have not attended inaugurations due to security concerns and have sent diplomats instead.
In the invitations sent by President-elect Trump himself, a selection of leaders who have supported him during his numerous legal battles in the US is noted.
Who from Europe received an invitation from Trump?
As for Europe, Trump has only invited his "loyalists", like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has said she hopes to attend the inauguration.
Right-wing Eurosceptic Nigel Farage, who leads the UK's Reform party, will be at the ceremony, as will French far-right politician Eric Zemmour.
Co-leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) Tino Chrupalla said he would attend the inauguration, as the party seeks to highlight its ties to the incoming administration.
Despite reports suggesting that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had been invited, Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs denied the claims on Wednesday, stating that neither Orbán nor any Hungarian government official received an invitation.
Which European leader admitted that he would not participate?
Meanwhile, on the other side of the coin, there were those who did not receive an invitation and declared that they would not go to the inauguration. Initially, no political representative from the current German government is expected to attend. Instead, Germany will be officially represented by its ambassador to Washington, Andreas Michaelis.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also not attend next week's ceremony; the British ambassador will represent the UK.
French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will not attend.
What about the Balkans?
It is not yet known which Balkan leaders will attend Donald Trump's inauguration, but so far it is reported that only one Balkan leader has received an invitation to be part of the inauguration.
This is the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, who will be one of the rare European leaders to be in Washington during President Trump's inauguration, Macedonian media report.
World leaders are not invited to the inauguration, but Mickoski is among those who have received private invitations to the event from officials connected to the incoming administration.
Albanian Prime Ministers Edi Rama and Albin Kurti and the presidents of Serbia and Montenegro, Aleksandar Vučić and Jakov Milatović, do not seem to be in the "eyes" of the new American president. So far, none of them have stated that they have received or found invitations in private to attend the inauguration./ Pamphlet
